How I Fix My Hair After Holidays, Beach, and Sun Damage
Every summer, I come back from vacation with amazing memories… and hair that looks like it survived a small wildfire.
Between the sun, saltwater, chlorine, wind, and dry air, my hair ends up dry, tangled, and frizzy — the complete opposite of healthy. After a few too many summers like this, I created a simple, natural recovery routine that brings my hair back to life fast. Here’s exactly what I do.
Step 1: I Start with Aloe Vera Shampoo
The first thing I avoid post-holiday is harsh shampoo. No sulfates. No synthetic lather bombs. I switch to a gentle, aloe vera-based shampoo that soothes my scalp and hydrates my hair without stripping it.
Aloe vera is naturally rich in vitamins and enzymes that calm inflammation, and it helps restore moisture where the sun dried everything out. I also add panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) for softness and strength. This step sets the foundation for everything that comes next.
Step 2: Protein Mask to the Rescue — But Not Every Time
When my hair feels limp, flat, or not as alive as it used to be, it usually means it’s time for a protein treatment. I do this once a month, or whenever my hair needs help rebuilding its internal structure.
This mask is packed with hydrolyzed proteins and nourishing oils that strengthen from the inside out. I apply it to damp hair, let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then rinse. It makes a huge difference in bounce and strength — but it’s definitely not something I do every wash day.
Step 3: Deep Conditioner = Moisture Therapy
Next, I use a rich deep conditioner made with organic shea butter, sweet almond oil, and extra virgin olive oil — my go-to for intense hydration. I apply it from mid-length to ends, wrap my hair in a towel or shower cap, and let it soak in for about 20 minutes.
It revives the driest parts of my hair, brings back softness, and tames frizz without weighing anything down.
Step 4: Style (or Not), Depending on Your Hair Type
If I’m going for defined, tight curls, I apply my homemade flax seed gel while my hair is soaking wet. It gives natural hold without crunch, helps curls form beautifully, and adds a soft, bouncy finish.
But if you have straight or wavy hair, you can absolutely skip the gel. Just go in with my silicone-free serum — it seals in moisture, adds shine, tames flyaways, and protects from heat if you’re blow-drying or styling. It’s lightweight and won’t leave any buildup.
Bonus Tips I Swear By
-
Trim your ends. Don’t hang on to crispy bits.
-
Skip heat styling for a few weeks — air-dry or braid.
-
Use a wide-tooth comb, not a brush.
-
Sleep on a silk pillowcase to prevent overnight breakage.
Your Hair Can Bounce Back — Naturally
I make all my products in small batches using organic ingredients because I believe hair repair should be simple, clean, and effective. You don’t have to do every step every time you wash your hair — just give your hair what it needs when it needs it.
