Many of our customers ask why our sunscreens do not reach SPF 50 or 50+.
We would like to explain our philosophy clearly and honestly.
At Tonia’s Handmade, we use only natural and organic sun filters. Specifically, the sole active ingredient in all our sunscreens is 100% Non-Nano Zinc Oxide. We do not use any chemical filters.
Zinc Oxide is a natural mineral that works by reflecting ultraviolet radiation rather than absorbing it. This provides genuine broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
However, the higher the concentration of Zinc Oxide needed to achieve a higher SPF (such as 50), the thicker, harder to spread, and more opaque the product becomes. This often results in a noticeable white cast on the skin, making daily use less pleasant.
For this reason, we believe that SPF 30 with Non-Nano Zinc Oxide offers the optimal balance between:
- Effective sun protection
- Pleasant texture and easy application
- Natural finish with minimal white cast
Additionally, it has been observed that the thicker and whiter a sunscreen is, the less product people tend to apply. As a result, an SPF 50 may ultimately provide less real protection than an SPF 30 that is easy to spread and used correctly in sufficient quantity.
Our philosophy is clear: We do not chase excessively high SPF ratings that rely on chemical filters. Our priority remains safety, purity, and practical effectiveness. We prefer a sunscreen that you will enjoy using every day, rather than one that stays unused on the shelf.
All our sunscreens – for both face and body – are formulated exclusively with high-quality Non-Nano Zinc Oxide. Whether it’s the Carnivore Tallow Balm SPF30, the Oil Free Face Sunscreen, the Waterproof Body Sunscreen, or the Tinted BB Cream, you can be confident that you are choosing a clean, natural, and safe product.
If you have any questions about our ingredients, sun protection levels, or need help choosing the right sunscreen for your skin type, we are always here to assist you.
