Full Protection from UVA and UVB with Physical Filters

Get complete protection from both UVA and UVB rays with physical filters. Most chemical sunscreens do not offer the same broad-spectrum defense. Physical UV blockers, like zinc oxide, are preferred for sensitive skin, such as young children’s, and for those who may have concerns about certain ingredients in chemical sunscreens.

What is a Physical Filter?

Zinc oxide is a physical filter, meaning it does not absorb into the skin but instead it creates a physical barrier that reflects sunlight, much like a mirror. Consequently, a 15-20 minute waiting period, often associated with chemical formulations, is not required for this sunscreen to become effective; protection commences immediately upon skin contact.

How to Use for Best Results:

To achieve the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) listed on the label, you should apply approximately two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. In practice, this means you should apply about 1/3 teaspoon to your face and neck area and 6 teaspoons for the entire body. Many people do not apply enough sunscreen, which is why sunburns and tanning can still occur despite sunscreen use.

Why I Do Not Stock SPF 50

Zinc oxide is the only mineral sunblock that offers full broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Since it reflects light rather than absorbing it, it can leave a white cast on the skin when used in higher percentages. It also makes sunscreens harder to spread.

SPF 30 with zinc oxide provides the perfect balance between protection, appearance, and usability. I don’t believe it’s worth increasing the zinc oxide percentage just to reach SPF 50, which would result in a ghostly appearance. SPF 50 only applies to chemical filters, which absorb sun rays rather than reflecting them.

Additionally, people tend to use much less sunscreen with SPF 50 because it is harder to spread and appears more opaque on the skin. As a result, SPF 50 may offer less protection than SPF 30, which is easier to apply and won’t leave a white cast.

Sunscreen should always be used in combination with other sun protection measures, such as wearing sun protective hats, protective clothing, sunglasses, and seeking shade.
